The 1974 Clos de Tart is a vintage that I have encountered once before. Here, it has an intriguing nose with that same deepness in hue that I remarked upon before. The nose is a bit rustic yet delivers lovely rosehip and rose petal scents intertwined with the light red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a surprisingly sweet core of fruit, maybe missing the breeding of the bottle seven years earlier, but I appreciate the red plum and molasses notes on the finish, as I mentioned before, gifting surprising purity considering the vintage. Tasted at the "Four" dinner at Bouchard Père in Beaune.

The 1974 Clos de Tart Grand Cru ought to have been DOA – but this is unpredictable Burgundy. Healthy and quite deep in color, it has a lifted, elegant bouquet with fine mineralité , prompting several attendees of the tasting to scratch their heads and ask, “How?” There are enticing red cherry and bergamot scents here, plus a touch of vervain tea. The palate is medium-bodied, quite floral and surprisingly pure, and the tannins are slightly edgy. Just a little, acceptable dryness creeps in toward the saline finish. I have tasted few 1974 Burgundy wines as good as this. Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.
Pale and old looking. Green/yellow rim. Very mature nose that reminds me of the 1979. Rich and flattering and then pretty dry on the end. Lots of pleasure; it's just not the purest. (JR)

Clos de Tart is the largest Grand Cru monopole site in the Côte d’Or. Wine has been produced from this vineyard for over 900 years and it remains one of Burgundy’s top Pinot Noirs.
