Score 87-90/100 · Drink 2000-2005, Pierre Rovani, Apr 2000

The 1998 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet exhibits yellow fruits, grilled toast, and impressive richness in its aromatic profile. Stones, apples, and tangy lemons are displayed in its zesty character. While this wine suffers from the vintage's characteristic lack of harmony, it possesses an impressive punch of rich, ripe fruit in the mid-palate. This grand cru has excellent grip, liveliness, and length. Projected maturity: now-2005. Importer: Frederick Wildman & Sons, New York, NY; tel (212) 355-0700.

More complex, exotic aromas of mango and nut skin. Sweeter than the Batard, with excellent intensity, firm acids and very good thrust. Chewy, dense and tight. Again, not particularly fat, but has good grip and sneaky persistence. Perhaps longer than the Batard.
