The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin is unbelievably sophisticated and gracious. The warmth of the year has filled out the wine beautifully and also softened the tannins. This is a decidedly rich, expansive Charmes that impresses for its aristocratic personality. I hope to taste it again in another decade or so. I noted that the Charmes was quite a bit more complex from bottle than it was from barrel.

My tasting at Dujac was one of the highlights of the two weeks I spent in Burgundy in late November/early December 2011. I tasted through all the 2010s in barrel and 2009s in bottle. The domaine’s 2009s are among the wines of the vintage. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel. (this also finished its malo on the late side): Good bright red. Primary but very ripe aromas of raspberry, flowers, graphite and meat. Juicy and spicy but a bit lean and youthfully imploded, with brisk acidity currently keeping the fresh fruit flavors under wraps. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent. I like this wine's high tones but would not touch a bottle for at least six or seven years.
