Michel’s 2005 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes is a serious wine. Made from 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah that was aged 24 months in new and once used barrels, it’s a serious effort that offers terrific, chocolaty dark fruits, spice, garrigue and toasted-bread aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and one of the more substantial efforts in the vintage, enjoy this beauty anytime over the coming 4-5 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve for longer.

Dark ruby. Spicy raspberry and cherry on the nose, with cracked pepper and garrigue scents adding complexity. Fresh, focused and brisk, offering clean red fruit flavors, soft tannins and good finishing cling. This drinks well now.

Ruby-red. Intense spice and floral notes accent bright red berry aromas. Quite tangy in the mouth, with vibrant strawberry and raspberry flavors given grip by firm tannins and firm finishing minerality. Long, precise and very nicely balanced.

Century-old Grenache with 15% Syrah. Polished, high toned, almost floral nose. Very sumptuous and flattering. Rather more refined even than the Rasteau on the front palate although those chewy tannins certainly make their presence felt later on. Very chewy indeed! This seems more of a vigorous, vaguely modern red wine than an essence of southern Rhône, and will need quite a time. (JR)
