Ruby-red. Sexy oak spice-accented cherry, blueberry and candied plum on the nose, with a wallop of vanilla. Quite sweet in the mouth, with powerful dark berry liqueur, vanilla and mocha flavors on a plush, velvety frame. The lush, creamy finish repeats the dark berry notes and carries impressively, coating the entire palate. Emphatically modern and loaded with immediate appeal, but not for traditionalists, even if the fruit and oak are in fine balance.

The 2001 Altanza Reserva Miro is brilliantly made. It has a gorgeous Miro painting reproduced on the label attached to the extra heavy custom-made glass bottle. Reportedly, the Martinez family paid $80,000 to the Miro estate for the rights to the artwork. Remarkably, the wine stands up to the art with no problem. The super-spicy, toasty, espresso roast, chocolate and blackberry aromas lead to a seamless, layered, rich wine that admirably combines elegance with power. It is a tour de force in Rioja winemaking. Cellar this beauty for 5 years and drink it over the following 15+. Importer: F.L. Navarro, Quality Wines of Spain, New York, NY; tel. (212) 842-8181
