(100% grenache blanc, raised in barriques): Vivid yellow. Vibrant, high-pitched aromas of orchard fruits, lemon curd and ginger, with a hint of vanillin oak. Bright and racy, offering pure pear and candied citrus flavors that become spicier with air. Displays an exotic floral quality on the finish, which lingers with noteworthy persistence.

Even better is the sensational 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Belvedere, which is 100% Grenache blanc aged a half year in barrel. This wine shows no wood whatsoever, has crisp acidity, notes of honeyed nectarine, citrus oil, lemon blossom and a medium to full-bodied, long finish with freshness. Drink it over the next several years, although there are those who claim Grenache blanc ages wonderfully. This chateau, owned by the quality conscious Brechet family, sits just to the south of Rayas.
