Score 91/100 · Drink 2003-2011, Robert Parker, Feb 2003

The 2001 Cuvee des Galets (a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and 20% Syrah) boasts a dense inky/purple color in addition to sumptuous aromas of freshly ground pepper, blackberry liqueur, and lavender. Ripe, full-bodied, sweet, rich flavors caress the palate with no hard edges. This glorious, dry, substantial red can be drunk now as well as over the next 6-8 years. As evidenced by these tasting notes as well as those from the 2000s and 1999s, this is an extraordinary offering, bottled without fining or filtration. It is among the most exciting wines being produced from any of the Cotes du Rhone appellations. This estate, located in the village of Travaillan, and run by perfectionist Daniel Boulle, has quickly emerged as one of the most serious Cotes du Rhone producers. This offering is an ageworthy, super-concentrated example of what can be accomplished by a passionate, highly committed producer. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel.
