A small, independent grower estate, Collard-Picard farms 16 hectares of vines in the Marne Valley and Côte des Blancs. The resulting Champagnes – notable in particular for the use of oak – are impressive, and a source of excellent value.
Founded in 1996, Collard-Picard was created when Olivier Collard and Caroline Picard brought together vines from their families in the Marne Valley and Côte des Blancs to form their own property, with around 16 hectares today. Both families have a long history in the region, and together they’re forging an impressive reputation for themselves. Their Premier and Grand Cru sites in Mesnil are farmed organically, while their vines in the Marne are enviably located. The base wines are all aged in oak, something that is far from common today (other than by producers such as Krug), and they choose to avoid malolactic fermentation to preserve the bright malic acid in the wines. Their son Alexandre is now helping at the estate.
