Caiarossa 2023 opens with an earthy, woodland berry fragrance which leads into a tight, vertical palate. It's clearly still very young as it's not giving too much away, but it promises some fleshiness as it unfolds. The purity and clarity is impressive, and the balance is superb. Caiarossa's flagship wine is not your typical Tuscan Bordeaux blend. In fact, it's not a Bordeaux blend at all. The main components in the blend are Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, but it also incorporates smaller percentages of Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Grenache.

The 2023 Caiarossa is a powerful, brooding wine. A blast of dark blue/purplish fruit, gravel, incense, new leather and licorice makes a strong opening statement. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2023 for at least a few years, as the tannins are rather imposing today. This is an especially somber Caiarossa.
