Score 93/100 · Neal Martin (Vinous), Nov 2018

The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has a slightly disjointed nose at first, but it binds together with aeration, picking up subtle chalk and lemon peel notes. The palate is tightly wound on the entry and demands encouragement in the glass, but it is worth the effort. Nutty and spicy flavors are accented by touches of orange peel, and a gourmand, almost biscuity finish implies too strong a wood influence. It is difficult to see where this is going to go, but my score reflects my optimism. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet has an attractive bouquet, quite spicy in style and strangely Meursault-like, mercurial in the glass with scents of honeysuckle and jasmine, then a touch of sea spray. The palate is saline on the entry, a little austere at first, but it segues into a very refined finish that offers impressive precision in the context of the vintage. Simply a delicious, pretty Champ Canet to enjoy over the next decade.
