Tasting notes
The Townsend is still a baby as of July 2025, brimming with tension and coiled energy. Aromas of sagebrush and graphite carry through to the palate, where inky dark-berry fruit—mulberry, black cherry, and blueberry—unfolds with depth. Superfine tannins, edged with a chocolaty quality, build momentum across the full-bodied palate, finishing with mineral length and generosity. For now, it remains taut and will require time in the cellar to unwind.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Townsend is Antinori’s top wine from their property on Atlas Peak. Still tightly coiled, the 2021 offers up an exotic mélange of graphite, new leather, espresso, mocha, blackberry and violet. I would give this potent, savory mountain Cabernet a few years in bottle. The sleek, polished style seems to represent a new era for Antinori in Napa Valley.
Deep purple in colour. Lovely lush black-cherry, candied violet, raspberry and orange-peel nose. Lightly sandy tannins with a billowing sweet spot of fruit on the palate and fresh acidity. A bit of warmth to the finish. (SCJ)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Townsend is cut from the same cloth, with a concentrated, focused, elegant, classic style. Cassis, crushed stone, graphite, and a kiss of flowers all emerge on the nose, and it has beautiful purity and elegance, with medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. It brings slightly more mid-palate depth compared to the Cabernet Franc, as well as ripe, building tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. It's going to age beautifully.
