(Outstanding)<br /> Discreet though perceptible wood sets off the more elegant aromas of plum, black cherry, cassis and cool spice nuances. The mouthfeel of the slightly bigger flavors is also suave and succulent with more sophisticated, and firmer, tannins supporting the dusty, youthfully austere and lightly stony finale.

Cask sample. Again, the sample seems to lack a little freshness, but there is much more finesse here. Good ripeness, dark-fruit flavours, some spice and bright acidity to keep the palate fresh. Tannins a little drying to finish but this should develop nicely. (AWH)
Possesses a lovely, dark cassis fruit, with a smoky, mineral edge and very firm tannins that lead to a lingering finish. Among the best wines in the cellar here. Rebourseau has a spectacular 2.21ha parcel in the centre of the Clos, mostly in the Quartier de Marei Bas, south from the old vines of Château de la Tour. The wine in 2020 was much more precious than even 2019, but yields were limited. It was picked from the 24th August and mostly destemmed.
The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has another quite opulent bouquet that is lavished in new oak and whilst attractive, this is slightly obscuring the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite "sexy" dark cherry and cassis fruit. Good tension on the finish although there is a fair bit of new oak to be absorbed.
About the producer
Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, this domaine has a long history and impressive vineyards (with over five hectares of Grand Cru), but has long been considered an under-performer. Today, however, the Bouygues brothers (of Montrose and Clos Rougeard) have taken ownership and change is afoot.
