The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has an intriguing bouquet, quite meaty and almost Rhône-like in style, but well defined and certainly possessing plenty of charm. The palate is medium-bodied with bold, solid, obdurate tannin. This is clearly a Premier Cru designed for long-term aging, and I suspect that it is beginning to close down. One for the patient among you. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Tasted blind, the 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts exhibits aromas of cassis, raw cocoa and new oak, followed by a surprisingly firm, drying palate that was somewhat inscrutable and certainly lacked the depth and dimension of its peers. Perhaps it's just shut down?

A menthol top note can be found on the relatively high-toned red currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of Asian tea, orange peel, hoisin and sandalwood. There is notably more volume and mid-palate concentration to the big-bodied flavors that manage to be at once elegant yet powerful, all wrapped in a very firm, mildly austere and hugely long finale. Excellent but note that patience will be required. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
