Tasting notes
Saturated ruby. Spice- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, succulent flowers and candied licorice on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy, sweet and focused on the palate, offering intense boysenberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors that turn sweeter and open up on the back half. The dark berry and floral notes resonate on an extremely long, sappy finish that's given shape by harmonious, slow-building tannins.

I tasted two vintages of the three top reds, starting with the 2016 Clos Martinet. This wine shows the more tight-knit character of the 2016s, which Sara Pérez compares with 2012, a year of intense heat with some blocking of the plants. The wines are closed in general, but this Clos Martinet is possibly the most relaxed of the 2016s. It's ripe but has tension and some earthy rusticity. This has a continuity since 2000, and there is a big change in the 2017. 13,000 bottles produced.
