One of the undiscovered glories of Alsace, as well as the world, is that region’s dry Muscats. The 1994 Muscat Goldert (25 cases for America), made from the limestone soils of the Goldert vineyard, is a totally different style of Muscat than Zind-Humbrecht’s 1994 Muscat d’Alsace Herrenweg. With high acidity, and a firmer, more structured feel on the palate, this is a wine of immense richness and body. It possesses a backward personality with considerable mineral terroir elements. According to Olivier Humbrecht, this particular Muscat can age for 20 years, atypical for the generally short-lived Muscats of Alsace. It is a spectacular example of this varietal. The importer for the Zind-Humbrecht wines for most of the United States is Wine Markets International, Woodbury, NY; tel. (516) 364-1850, and for the state of California, Kermit Lynch Selections, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524.
