Tasting notes
The radiant, intensely golden colored 1990 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann offers a deep, pure and flinty-mineral bouquet of crushed stones. Generous on the palate but without the richness and concentration of the 1989, this is a savory and rather lean but also intense (in terms of extract) Clos Saint-Urbain with finesse and elegance as well as mineral drive and soul. Coming from a sunny, warm, medium-late vintage with significant coulure but ripe and healthy grapes, the 1990 doesn't taste fully dry and quite fruity but is maybe less rich than the 1989. Based on a low crop, it's an excellent Riesling, though, and surely one of the role models for the German Grosses Gewächs movement that started some years later. 12.8% alcohol with 6.4 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023.
