Dark red in the middle, mahogany at the rim. Developing aromas of roasted plum, coffee, chocolate, game and camphor, plus a whiff of wet animal. Smooth but not especially delineated; seems rather hard following a sweet entry. Furry tannins are beginning to overwhelm finishing fruit. This bottle is well on its way to drying out. Peterson says he should have pulled this wine off its skins a bit earlier: the longer maceration brought aromatic complexity at the cost of some of the wine suppleness. Still, he says, the '87 usually shows a bit better than this sample. 14% alcohol. and fading.
