Score 89+/100 · Drink 2027-2029, Billy Norris, Vinous, Jan 2026

The 2023 Pinot Noir Riverbed, from the estate vineyard in Carneros, is slightly less balanced and significantly more muscular than the other Pinots in the range. It leads off with a woody, slightly drying character that obscures some fruit expression. Lurking beneath the surface and serious structure are shades of cedar, grilled sage and white pepper, but the 2023 feels like a sketch today. Hopefully time will help fill in some of the gaps.

From the Riverbed vineyard. Very well-drained site compared with the rest of Carneros. A windy site but not as windy as, for example, Gloria Ferrer. 25-year-old vines on gravelly clay loam. East–west orientation. Calera clone on 101-14 rootstock. 4-day cold soak, 10% saignée, 35% whole cluster. Fermented for 16 days in tank. Barrel-aged for 17 months (50% new). Savoury and mineral. More structure and acidity than the Laceroni Vineyard bottling just tasted. Quite chewy. Still quite youthful. (JR)
