The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule / Auction) opens with a very intense but elegant and delicate as well as flinty bouquet with smoked fruit aromas. Very refined and highly elegant on the palate, this is a super finessed and filigreed, weightless, crystalline and irresistible Auslese with a long, intense yet always refined and stimulating saline finish. A fabulous Auslese indeed! 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 18 24 in January 2025.

One of the great Mosel Auslese masterpieces of modern times, this has all the floral splendor of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard site on the medium-bodied palate, through which an extremely delicate thread of floral honey flows. Then the exotic fruit aromas cascade over you at the extremely long and precise finish. Perfect balance makes this seem much less sweet than it really is. Limited production. Drink or hold.
Again, more fumy reduction here but the fruit pours over the top. Rich, pure, apricot fruit, the fruit so open that the acidity seems relatively mild – even if it is not. Utterly pure, long, vibrant. Bitter-orange intensity on the finish. (JH)
The 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Goldkapsel opens with a fleeting touch of mint oil before revealing a world of peachy suppleness and concentration, countered by lemon and tender, light-footed elegance. It unfolds with exquisite aromatic finesse. Yes, this is a Goldkapsel, but its lightness and purity are exquisite. So fine and bright with a lastingly zesty finish.
