The 2024 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a magnificent expression of this terroir. The bouquet is alluring and complex, intertwining red berries and cherries with rose petals, cinnamon, bergamot and a wisp of smoke. On the palate, it is full-bodied and ample yet effortlessly refined, showing purity, balance and a silken texture. Vibrant acidity and a touch of saline minerality drive the long, precise finish, leaving a lingering sense of perfume and energy.

Medium crimson in colour. I am needing to coax out the nose which is not as sublimely explosive than it has been in certain riper vintages. Tougher and tighter with grainier tannins, more difficult. The acidity pokes through. Not the same level as the last two Volnay 1ers Crus, nor indeed up to its usual standard as this is often a sublime cuvée chez Henri Boillot.

Based in Meursault and farming some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, Henri Boillot is a leading address in Burgundy. He crafts fine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but the estate is best known for its flagship monopole vineyard, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère.
