The 2023 Pinot Noir Cohn Vineyard comes mainly from old vines planted in rocky, iron-rich soils. “Burt Williams used to make this in the 1990s,” Director of Winemaking Jeff Mangahas notes. Surrounded by redwood forests, “it is one of the older vineyards on Westside Road,” he notes. While there have been some newer plantings, "it’s mainly that 1970s massal selection. The old vines, mixed clonal material and picking it all at once gives you that built-in complexity.” Matured for 16 months in 58% new French oak, the nose is bursting with pomegranate, red cherry, orange peel, fennel, mossy bark and incense. The medium-bodied palate offers highly concentrated, layered flavors framed by velvety tannins and vibrant acidity, and it has a very long finish. It should be long lived in the cellar. 240 cases were made.
