Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2028-2044, Neal Martin, Jan 2026

The 2023 Volnay Champans 1er Cru (24 months in barrel) has a well-defined bouquet with cranberry, wild strawberry, peppermint and light incense aromas that combine beautifully. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a core of sweet vanillary red fruit with a dash of spice box towards the composed and sustained finish. This actually works better with longer in barrel than the Santenots.

Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2028-2044, Neal Martin, Nov 2024

The 2023 Volnay Champans 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with vivid red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, plus a sous-bois element that becomes more palpable with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, a little more sinewy than the 2022 and maybe just a little more tannic on the finish. It will develop well in bottle but patience is required.
