Score 95/100 · Drink 2026-2040, Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous, Apr 2026

The 1964 Faustino I was made using traditional carbonic maceration and aged in American oak. Legendary in Rioja, the vintage offers aromas of tomato leaf, a touch of tomato jam and gentle, still-perfumed wood. Savory nuances of broth and tomato sauce add complexity. Remarkably, the profile remains clear and recognizable. Tasted young decades ago, it showed the oak in much the same way. Intense and driven by elevated acidity, it remains a very good wine.
