Score 87/100 · Drink 2019-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, May 2019

This was the only wine made by Podere Sapaio in 2014. It was a cooler year, with a lot of rain in July and August, and the 2014 Bolgheri Rosso Volpolo turned out greener and sharper as a result. The finish, especially, has sourness and a prickly nature that is unmistakable. This vintage is more contained in terms of texture and a bit shorter in terms of persistence.

Impenetrable dark ruby – impressive for this very cool and protracted vintage. Much less upfront on the nose and more in the claret mould than the 2015 version, yet clearly from Tuscany. Savoury-sweet cassis fruit with hints of spice and raw meat. Suave cassis fruit framed by firm tannins. Long cassis and gripping tannins on the finish with a hint of oak. Wonderful freshness yet firmly tannic. (WS)
