Score 92/100 · Drink 2011-2023, Robert Parker, May 2011

The 2001 Merlot Estate reveals similar coffee bean, red and black currant characteristics intermixed with notions of licorice, herbs and underbrush. Richer and slightly fuller-bodied than the regular Napa cuvee, it exhibits a more saturated plum/purple color, lots of dark fruits and a lush, full-bodied mouthfeel. It can be drunk now and over the next 10-12 years. With nine separate offerings, all performing exceptionally well, Duckhorn Vineyards must be thrilled with the evolution of their 2001s. This is a terrific performance for these Duckhorn wines with most of them showing better than they did upon release – always a great sign. Tel. (866) 367-9945; Fax (707) 945-1009
