Tasting notes
The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Fieramonte wafts up with a seductive blend of crushed black cherries, violet pastille, clove and a dusting of cocoa powder. This is pure elegance, mixing polished red berry fruits with crunchy mineral tones, clove and cinnamon stick, all balanced by tantalizing acidity. The 2018 shows the best qualities of the vintage: feminine and pure yet still potent, as it tapers off with amazing length and sweet tannins. I am humbled by this glorious Amarone.

While the cooler and more detailed 2016 is a hard act to follow, this does so with admirable aplomb despite the more typical heat of 2018. Mulled cherries, aniseed, camphor, mossy undergrowth, shiitake mushrooms and dashi. The mid-palate is savory, nourishing and slathered with umami. Aromatic and textural, with the oak and mineral notes providing tension. The finish runs very long and fresh. This is excellent. Sustainable. Drink or hold.
