Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2012

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is rich, seductive and full-bodied. Roasted, coffee beans, tobacco, licorice, incense and mint are all wrapped together in a rich, sensual fabric that is highly appealing. Today, the 2009 is open, radiant and totally expressive. Mondavi doesn't take too many chances in this fairly middle-of-the-road offering. At the same time, there is no denying the 2009 is beautiful. The blend includes dollops of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec.

(blended with 8% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot, 3% merlot and 1% malbec; aged in 75% new oak for 18 months): Good bright ruby. Complex nose offers plum, black cherry, graphite, flowers, menthol and cedary oak. Nicely fleshy but not at all muscular, with a juicy, penetrating character to the cassis, licorice, cedar and spice flavors. An elegantly styled cabernet with firm but smooth tannins, from a vintage that winemaker Genevieve Janssens describes as "cold."
