In the bottle with the red wax capsule, the Fedegraziani 2022 Etna Rosso Profumo di Vulcano paints a perfect portrait of the traditional Etna farming philosophy. The wine is made with 70% Nerello Mascalese, 15% Nerello Cappuccio and 15% Alicante and Francisi (a local word for "we think these are French grapes, but know knows?"). Basically, it's an ancient mess of vines. Fruit comes from 600 meters in elevation in the Contrada Feudo di Mezzo over two parcels. These sites were planted at the end of the 1800s. The plants are 100 years old on average and on their own roots. Starting with this vintage, a tiny bit of fruit from the highest part of Montelaguardia was added in order to illustrate the concept of "perfumes from the volcano." The wine is fermented in open-top fermenters with spontaneous yeasts and no temperature control. It is aged in a combination of new and used tonneaux for 20 months. It shows rich fruit flavors and extra textural richness with ripe tannins and medium-plus concentration. This is a release of 6,300 bottles.
