Score 88/100 · Drink 2007-2013, Robert Parker, Apr 2007

The 2004 Cote Rotie Les Rochains exhibits more fruit and hints of oak and spring flowers, but then seems to narrow out in the mouth because of the relatively high acidity. It doesn’t have the character of the Cote Rozier or the charm of the regular Cote Rotie, but it is still a very good effort for this vintage. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. Bonnefond has emerged as one of the finest producers of Cote Rotie with a strong showing in nearly every vintage except for the poorer years like 2002. Even in 2004 his wines have more charm, fruit, and complexity than those of most of his peers. Dark purple. Exotic, vanilla-accented blackberry and mulberry aromas, with strong espresso and tobacco tones. Very sweet in the mouth, with deep, creamy dark berry flavors and smooth, well-integrated tannins. This is quite oaky today but there's also a load of rich, sweet fruit carrying through the silky finish and lingering impressively.

Saturated purple. Fresh nose opens slowly to reveal blueberry and cassis fruit along with tightly focused lavender and violet notes. Very sweet and round on the palate, with serious depth and a strongly roasted quality. This turns even more floral in the glass and finishes sweet and bright, with a silky texture and tangy persistence.
