70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese grom Greve hillsides around Ruffoli where Querciabella is based. Made since 1981. 1974 was the first vintage of Querciabella when burgundy lover and collector Pepito Castiglioni, transatlantic businessman, wanted to have a wine he could proudly serve as a first growth equivalent. From 2003 onwards the ratio was 70:30 Cabernet Sauvignon to Sangiovese. High-elevation Cabernet grown at 400–450 m. Sangiovese is very similar fruit to the Gran Selezione wine. No Camartina was made in 2014 or 2009. Picked 1–21 October. TA 6.23 g/l, pH 3.4. Deep crimson. High toned and chewy. Sappy and energetic. Well melded blend. (JR)

The 2021 Camartina (Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese) is a potent, tightly wound offering from Querciabella. Blue-toned fruit, graphite, dried cherry, mocha and new leather all take shape gradually. The 2021 is a touch compact today, but I see that as a positive for its long-term prospects. Readers will have to be patient with this classy, polished wine. Camartina was once the flagship at Querciabella. These days, it gets a lot of competition from the Gran Seleziones!

Querciabella

Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
