Score 88/100 · Drink 2014-2017, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2014

The estate's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is darker and richer than the straight bottling, but it is also pretty one-dimensional. Sweet plums, cherries, spices and French oak resonate on the juicy finish. The 2009 Altero is also fully mature and needs to be enjoyed within the next 2-3 years at most.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is packed tight with clove, cinnamon spice, black fruit and tobacco. Because the mouthfeel is much thinner than previous editions of this wine, those oak tones seem even more evident here. They should integrate and retreat into the fruity texture of the wine with more time aging in the bottle. Drink: 2017-2024. Importer: The Sorting Table, www.thesortingtable.com

Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Sweet fruitcake and a little smoky. Supple palate with good acidity and not overtly big, yet a little penalised by stewed fruit notes. (WS)
