FINE+RARE, Jul 2025

Samuel Billaud’s Petit Chablis is always an excellent buy. The wine comes from a parcel just above Grand Cru Les Clos and in 2024 it is singing. The nose is chalky and pure, packed with vibrant green apple and a limey edge. It’s super long, taut and sleek, driving on to a resounding mineral finish. Impressive.

The location of the vines, above Les Clos, is from this vintage indicated in the wine’s name. Charles Taylor MW says this must be the finest Petit Chablis made. He may well be right. Has all the power and concentration of the best AOP Chablis wines. Concentration, purity, loads of texture and finesse. Complete and hard to fault in the Petit Chablis context. Amazingly, only 12% alcohol. (AWH)

Affected by frost and hail—yielding barely 25 hectoliters per hectare—Samuel Billaud’s 2024 Petit Chablis wafts from the glass with scents of lemon oil, Granny Smith apple and oyster liquor. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, taut and chiseled, displaying the coolness of the vintage with a taut musculature. It is vinified exclusively in stainless steel.

A classic Chablis nose of mineral reduction, iodine and Granny Smith apple leads to dense and gorgeously textured middle weight flavors that culminate in a detailed, even chiseled, long finish that is markedly dry finish but not especially austere. This is an excellent Petit Chablis. Top-value. Drink 2028+
