The Savage Wines 2024 Piekenierskloof Grenache Thief in the Night offers dried cherry, cranberry, blueberry, violets and crushed peppercorn with a bright, energetic lift. The palate is driven by vivid acidity and fine, stem-influenced tannins that create a chalky texture, finishing clean and brisk. Fermented spontaneously with 20% whole-cluster fruit and aged 10 months in large 3,400-liter casks, the wine captures Piekenierskloof’s high, wind-exposed plateau conditions. This is a release of 5,400 bottles.

The 2024 Thief in the Night is pure Grenache from sandstone soils in Piekenierskloof, spontaneous ferment, 50% whole cluster (less than in previous vintages) with two weeks on the skins, ten months in foudre . This has plenty of dark, almost sultry plummy fruit on the nose, touches of melted tar and cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, beautifully balanced with an elegant finish that has a prickle of spice on the aftertaste.
