Deeper and richer, the Mourvèdre-dominated 2015 Panoplie (71% Mourvèdre, 24% Grenache, and 5% Syrah) offers loads of dark fruits and smoky, meaty, classic Mourvèdre notes in a tight, medium to full-bodied package. It has remarkable purity of fruit and its tannin quality is off the charts. It’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and drink well for two decades. This was another terrific tasting with Jason Haas, and he and his team at Tablas Creek continue to make elegant, classic, balanced wines from their estate in the northwestern part of Paso Robles. It’s worth noting that since 2008 they’ve favored cooler temperatures during fermentation and this shows in their wines’ purity and freshness. However, in my opinion, the wines today lack some of the depth and intensity found in previous vintages. Nevertheless, these are beautiful wine that age incredibly well.

Dark purple. A heady, exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, candied flowers, incense and baking spices, along with a smoky mineral overtone. Broad, deep and intensely spicy on the palate, offering sweet blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that flesh out slowly as the wine stretches out. Concentrated yet vibrant and almost shockingly lithe, showing strong finishing cut and chewy tannins that add final grip.

Deep vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed, expansive bouquet displays a wild array of red and blue fruit and floral scents plus suggestions of Asian spices, smoky minerals and incense. Sweet, energetic and focused on the palate, offering intense raspberry, boysenberry, candied lavender and spicecake flavors that show a striking interplay of richness and elegance. Juicy acidity adds lift to the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with superb, floral- and mineral-driven tenacity. I can't wait to see how this one turns out in bottle.

Blended of 71% Mourvèdre, 24% Grenache and 5% Syrah, the 2015 Panoplie has a medium garnet-purple color and slightly closed, earthy nose, revealing damp earth, forest floor and wet rock notes over crushed blackberries and wild blueberries, plus a waft of cracked black pepper. Full-bodied and densely packed with earth, black/red fruits and spice layers, it has a chewy structure and long, layered finish. 850 cases were made.
