Score 95/100 · Drink 2024-2040, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, May 2025

Vinified with 70% whole bunches, the 2021 Cote Rotie Les Journaries is stunning today, revealing aromas of violet, ripe dark berries and spices mingled with fresh notes. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, dense and structured, with a delicate, pure attack, an excellent core of fruit and refined tannins that lead to a fine, long and beautifully peppery finish. In the context of the vintage, this is a stunning bottle.

The 2021 Côte Rôtie Les Journaries (Maestria in Europe) comes from La Landonne, Côte Rozier, and Côte Blonde and was partially destemmed and brought up in 20% demi-muids. It brings more iron and black pepper, with a core of bright plum and black cherry fruits, medium body, ripe tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. It's not massively concentrated, but I love its overall balance, and it has a good sense of freshness and outstanding length. I always love taste with Agnes Levet at her cellar in heart of Ampuis and these wines are as old school Côte Rôtie as it gets. It’s worth pointing out that the cuvée are named differently in the US and Europe, with the Les Journaries (US) and Maestria (EU), and La Chavaroche (US) and Peroline (EU), being the same wine.

Deeply pitched black and blue fruit, floral, musky herb and licorice scents are energized by building mineral and cracked pepper flourishes. Broad and weighty on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors, along with suggestions of olive paste and espresso. Extremely primary (of course) but highly promising, finishing extremely long and spicy; solid tannins add grip.
