Score 96/100 · Drink 2004-2012, Pierre Rovani, Aug 2001

The stunning 1999 Clos St.-Denis has a dark ruby, almost black, saturated color. Leather, licorice, and blackberry syrup can be found in its boisterous aromatics. This full-bodied, chewy-textured wine has a magnificent breadth of black fruits, cherries, blueberries, and spices in its dense character. It is satin-textured, thick, powerful, and seamless. This exceptional wine should be consumed between 2004 and 2012. Importer: David Hinkle / Peter Vezan, North Berkeley Imports, Berkeley, CA; tel. (800) 266-6585.

Saturated deep ruby. Roasted plum, blackberry, licorice, mocha and bitter chocolate on the nose. Creamy and very intensely flavored, with outstanding depth of fruit. Lifted by a flavor of bitter chocolate. A wine of uncanny energy and thrust, made almost entirely from tiny millerande grapes. Very long, gripping finish. These '99 grand crus will need at least seven or eight years of additional cellaring.
