The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Le Petit Maupertui Grand Cru has a light tarry bouquet, the 80% whole bunch fruit imparting light earthy/loam aromas, joined by floral scents that become more pronounced with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and quite strict and linear toward the sappy finish, which cuts away a little briefly compared to the other Leroux Grand Crus. Very good, but not the best Clos Vougeot that I have encountered from Leroux.

A parcel by the wall of the Clos. 50% new oak. Barrel sample. Toasty and a little charry. Leaner on the palate than I expected. Dry, paper-fine texture. A contrast between richness on the nose and austerity of the palate. Long and firm. (JH)
