Drink 2021-2034, Neal Martin, Oct 2019

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos Saint-Marc 1er Cru offers more red fruit than its peers, quite fragrant and floral with touches of meat juice developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, touches of orange rind and white pepper with a grippy and slightly bland finish. I was expecting more. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos Saint Marc, the monopole owned by the domaine, yielded just four barrels for the hectare of vines. It has an engaging, broody bouquet that draws you in: darker fruit than the Clos des Argillières with sous bois and light morel aromas emerging with aeration. The palate is very well structured, quite compact with a fine line of acidity, grippy in the mouth and obdurate toward the finish. This will require long-term cellaring but it will be worth the wait.
