Deep bricky red. Gorgeous sweet fragrance that still has some red fruit and a definite hint of roses but also the beginnings of a more autumnal leafy maturity and some umami. On the palate, seductive fruit sweetness tangled up with wonderful freshness. The tannins are still very much present though they are slimming down with bottle age. It becomes more and more scented as it opens up in the glass, becoming very more seductive. Utterly moreish and scented all the way to the long finish. (JH)

The medium-bodied 2004 Barolo reveals beautiful color and expressive aromatics, with notable detail in its fruit and a pretty note of sweetness that lingers on the finish. This medium-bodied, entry-level Barolo should be an outstanding value as well. Cascina Bongiovanni's Barolo is made from the less well-exposed portions of Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto and Ceretta in Serralunga. It is aged in French oak barrels, of which 20% are new.

Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018. Proprietor Davide Mozzone is a passionate, energetic man endowed with a charismatic sense of humor. His enthusiasm is reflected in the wines themselves, which seem to improve with every passing vintage. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

(30% new oak) Very good deep, bright red. Rather exotic, perfumed nose combines raspberry coulis, flowers, minerals, spices, sage and juniper. Juicy and quite primary, with a fresh raspberry flavor lifted by flowers and a hint of orange peel. Very firmly built and not at all flashy but the slightly tough tannins are a bit youthfully spiky and this very pure Barolo will need time to gain in complexity. The 2003 is rounder than this 2004, which reminded me of a muscular Cote de Nuits. Mozzone told me he looks for elegance and immediate pleasure in his basic Barolo. He planned to bottled this wine in February of 2008.
