Tasting notes
The 2021 Mae Estate Sparkling Blanc de Noir Extra Brut is a beautiful sequel to the excellent 2020, offering a well-rounded bouquet of cherry blossom, kelp, nectarine and orange rind aromas. Racy energy, textural breadth and a pearly mousse intersect on the palate, concluding with a taut, linear and delicate finish. This is beautiful in its youth, but I suspect it will show even better after another year or so in bottle and develop beautifully for the better part of a decade.

Sourced entirely from the Mae Estate Vineyard, the 2021 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs settles into a decidedly richer profile from the 2 grams of dosage, with amplified mid-palate creaminess but the same precision as the Brut Nature tasted alongside. Golden apple, toasted brioche, baking spice and citrus pith build intensity with air. Fine mousse, generous volume and ample energy make the Extra Brut a real winner. Disgorged: February 2025.
