Including 10% Viognier and close to one-third stems, the 2016 Syrah Field Book has a massive, salty bouquet of gamey blue and black fruits, spring flowers, peach pit, bacon fat, and spice. With medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded, seamless texture, and a great finish, it's a singular wine that I obviously underrated last year.

About the producer

Spottswoode
Spottswoode is one of those rare Napa estates whose reputation rests less on volume or spectacle than on persistent exactitude. Set on the western edge of St Helena, where the Mayacamas rise and afternoon breezes temper the valley’s warmth, the vineyard occupies a favoured pocket of the appellation.
