I loved the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, which is still young and tight, with a clear ruby hue to go with a great bouquet of ripe red berries, white pepper, spice, and some classic matchstick-like reduction that's nicely integrated. Medium-bodied and balanced on the palate, it has a supple, seamless mouthfeel and a great finish. This gorgeous, layered, incredibly impressive 2013 has another two decades of prime drinking.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques has a musty, earthy nose, a touch of mushroom here and it feels rather loose knit. The palate is medium-bodied with a pinched entry. There is some hardness here, moderate depth and it does not really "flow" although it does improve with aeration in the glass. Perhaps bottle age will mellow this Lavaux Saint-Jacques, yet it pulls up short. Team Rousseau made better wines than this in 2013. Tasted September 2016.

Bright, dark red. Medicinal red cherry complicated by leather and underbrush on the nose. Sappy, crunchy red fruit flavors show good energy and lift. Finishes with serious but sweet tannins and lingering saline minerality. This cuvée has shown increasing depth in recent vintages.
