Scents of cedar and mocha mark the nose of the 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint Joseph, which spent about a year in 10% new oak. There's plenty of concentrated, velvety-textured fruit backing up the wood treatment, resulting in a delicious, plush, modern-styled Syrah.

I love this vineyard as well as this wine from Ferraton. The 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint Joseph has a big, rich, powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, chocolate, cured meats, tapenade, and a touch of flowers. These carry to a full-bodied, opulent Saint Joseph with loads of dark, meaty fruits, ripe, present tannins, lots of power, and yet a light, graceful texture. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade.

Bright purple. An expansive bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, peony and smoky bacon, along with suggestions of olive, licorice and dark chocolate. Deeply concentrated, smoke-accented blackberry liqueur and bitter cherry flavors show excellent delineation and a touch of back-end spiciness. Finishes broad and spicy, with building tannins and a strongly persistent floral note. There's a quite high pH of 4.0 here. The fruit is grown in Mauves, which is all granite-based soils. 15% new oak.

100% Syrah. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Candied black fruit with sweet oak spice. Light but balanced palate, finish dominated by toasted spices. Simplistic fruit, modern and polished. (RH)
