Score 89/100 · Drink 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2013

The 2011 Syrah comes across as a bit light-weight in this vintage. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried rose petals lift out of the glass. The aromatics are beautiful and intensely savory, but there is just a little mid-palate pliancy that is missing. Otherwise, this is a beautiful wine. Hints of tobacco, cedar and dried herbs linger on the close. Plumpjack's Syrah is made from the Hudson and Stagecoach Vineyards.

Plumpjack's 2011 Syrah is promising, even if it lacks the sheer excitement of the 2010. Crushed flowers, anise, sweet herbs and red berries are woven together in this pretty, medium- bodied wine. The 2011 is at times a bit compact and fleeting. In this vintage, most of the fruit came from Stagecoach.

The biggest news at Plumpjack is the departure of long-time winemaker Tony Biagi, who crafted a number of the finest wines to emerge from this gorgeous property in Oakville. Biagi is moving to Hourglass, which has needed more day-to-day attention for some time, while Plumpjack has installed an on-site winemaker for each of their three properties; Plumpjack, Cade and Odette, the company's new project in the Stags' Leap district. The new winemaker at Plumpjack is Aaron Miller, previously of Groth and Lewis. Companies evolve and people move on to new challenges. It happens. I have to say I have seen few, if any, wineries handle the first part of a transition like this with as much grace and intelligence as Plumpjack has. Tel. (707) 945-1220
