Score 92/100 · Drink 2021-2030, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate, Feb 2021

The 2017 Syrah is derived from vines in Seaview (69% of the assemblage) and Clarendon (31%), with up to 20% whole bunches and maturation in 500-liter French oak puncheons (62% new). Notes of vanilla, cedar and baking spices add a rich patina to the aromas of mixed berries and hints of cracked pepper on the nose. In the mouth, this spicy-savory effort is medium to full-bodied but a bit less expansive on the palate than expected, with silky tannins and notes of brown sugar on the long finish.

15 – 20% whole-bunch fermented. Aged for 19 months in French oak puncheons (62% new). Unfiltered. Impeccable bramble fruit on the nose. Juicy acidity and peppery spice give this classic Syrah hallmarks and there is beautifully sculpted tannin that is drinkable now but will support long cellaring. This has the majesty of McLaren Vale as well as the savoury complexity marking truly fine wine. (RH)
