Deep red-ruby color. Distinctly animal aromas of roasted meat and currant, with an offputting bandaid note. Then juicy, intense and focused in the mouth, but with elevated acidity and a repeating note of bandaid. Shapely and persistent, but minty and a bit dry. A very awkward showing.

The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa may be the lightest example I have tasted since Randy Dunn began making his blockbuster Cabs in 1979. It possesses a deep ruby/purple color, medium body, moderate levels of cassis fruit, and a tight, hard, narrow finish that will never flesh out. Although it will hold up for 10-12 years, there is clearly a lack of intensity/substance to this otherwise cleanly made lightweight. An interesting point of trivia is that Randy Dunn’s production of approximately 4,000 cases of Napa and Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon per year has not changed since the winery’s inception ... somewhat refreshing in view of the American cultural tendency to think that “bigger is better.” Tel.
