Tasting notes
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru offers ripe, precocious red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit on the nose, which is generous and voluminous in style. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fleshy, silky-smooth and caressing, revealing veins of blue fruit toward the peppery finish. This is very fine and oh so seductive, but whether it is a long-term proposition, well, we'll have to wait and see.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes reveals a lavish bouquet of cherries, exotic spices, sweet soil tones and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and supple, with good energy and definition, concluding with a mouthwatering finish.
At the bottom of La Tâche, on the upper part of this premier cru. Above the geological fault with a bit of limestone. 20% whole bunch. Tank sample. Mid greyish crimson. A touch of whole bunch here and thus a change in profile. Almost a minty note. Vegetal from the whole bunch but not leafy. You need a touch of vegetal and bitterness in a wine, suggests Liger-Belair ‘L’amer, c’est le sucre des adultes’ (bitterness is adults’ sugar). Lavender too. Fine papery tannins, a cool dark-red fruit and again impressive elegance. Relatively light on the palate but has fresh length. Tight, long and stony on the finish. (JH)
