Bright red. Pomegranate, redcurrant and rhubarb on the nose, with building smokiness. Smells very wound up and tastes like it as well, offering zesty red fruit, herb and mineral flavors and a touch of candied rose. Becomes richer with air and picks up a medicinal, peaty quality that reminded me of an Islay whisky. Finishes with good punch, lingering sweetness and strong iodine and botanical herb qualities. I have to wonder if this wine's smokiness is a result of the brushfires of the summer of 2008.
