Deep, shimmering violet. Powerful, mineral-driven cherry and dark fruit preserve, exotic spice, olive and incense aromas show sharp definition and pick up hints of potpourri and black pepper with aeration. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering intense boysenberry, kirsch, vanilla, fruitcake and candied lavender flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Repeats the blue fruit note on a wonderfully long, spice-tinged finish that features youthfully gripping tannins and a resonating florality.

Not yet bottled, as this cuvée always sees a longer élevage, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Les Grandes Places comes from a rocky site in the north part of the appellation. It’s full-bodied and powerful, with masses of tannins as well as terrific cassis and blackberry fruits. I always find a certain austerity in wines from this terroir, but this is nicely balanced and has terrific density as well as a blockbuster finish. As usual, it’s not for those seeking instant gratification.

Cask sample, tasted at the domaine. Vibrant pastille fruit – coconut and raspberry with chocolate and spice. Lots of dense and charred oak but carries it well, good fruit intensity and weight. Needs time for that oak to settle and integrate. (AC)

Ripe black/blue fruits, incense and a strong violet note on the exotically perfumed nose, along with smoky mineral and spice nuances that emerge with air. Sappy, penetrating and broad in the mouth, showing impressive depth and delineation to the boysenberry, cherry liqueur, salty olive and floral pastille flavors. At once rich and lively in character, finishing with impressive power, well-knit tannins and lingering spice, mineral and floral notes.
