Tasting notes
Its Syrah co-fermented with Marsanne, Reynvaan’s 2007 Syrah The Contender leads with a dusty aromatic alliance of crushed stone, dried blood, beef jerky, sage, dark cherry and cassis, delivering richly concentrated dark berry juiciness as well as persistent red meat, stony, and pungently herbal elements on a dense, finely-tannic palate. A hint of black pepper adds to the invigorating yet rather opaque, metaphorically dark finish of a bottling that, I suspect, is slightly reduced today and will benefit from at least several more years of bottle age. Mike and Gale Reynvaan purchased their home site near the base of the Blue Mountains south of Walla Walla in 2004, although their first-planted site was In The Rocks – neighboring to Cayuse’s En Cerise – the following year. Christophe Baron helped arrange for that purchase after agreeing to become their consultant (his only such gig). “He said ‘no!’ which progressed to ‘hell no!’” relates Mike Reynvaan, “but at last he said ‘I’ll do it if I have carte blanche.’ I knew enough French to know that meant trouble!” Planting around the impeccably-, indeed (in keeping with Reynvaan’s premonition) lavishly-equipped winery began in 2007, incorporating some of Baron’s vine selections, but principally a wealth of clones several of which aren’t represented at Cayuse; and that vineyard – which has thus far been exclusively dry-farmed; and which, at 1,500 feet, is amazingly one of the highest in the state – was dubbed Foothills In The Sun. Matt Reynvaan is in charge of organically farming that site as well as of the estate’s day-to-day winemaking; Baron and his crew collaborate in farming The Rocks. Eighty percent of the Reynvaans’ total plantings are Syrah. Extremely low yields, block-by-block fermentation and conscious exploration of terroir differences across small distances are fundamental to the Reynvaans’ approach, as is the determination they share with Baron that Reynvaan not become “a mini-Cayuse,” but establish its own protocols and style. “I do whatever I like to do,” asserts Baron, “and there’s a market for it. The same has to be true here, and every year the Reynvaan style is being fine-tuned.” Fermentation – usually co-fermentation with diverse white grapes where Syrah is concerned; and usually incorporating at least some stems – takes place exclusively in small stainless steel tanks and involves both pump-overs and punch-downs. Elevage is in barriques, though some 600-liter barrels (different in origin from those employed at Cayuse) are in the immediate future. Tel. (509) 525-3462

(includes 2% marsanne) Good deep red. Deeply pitched smoky nose is lifted by a hint of flowers. Sweeter and richer in the mouth than the 2007 In the Rocks, with an exotic hint of peach and an element of wild herbs. Finishes broad, tannic and a bit dry, but spreads out impressively on the back end. These tannins call for more patience than those of the gentler but more aromatic In the Rocks.
The 2007 The Contender Syrah is also from the In The Rocks Vineyard. It was co-fermented with Marsanne and aged in French oak for 18 months. It is a more terroir-driven effort with greater minerality and structure, and darker fruit. It merits 5-7 years of cellaring and will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2027. Reynvaan Family Vineyards’ first vintage was 2007. All of the fruit is from their Walla Walla estate vineyards, planted by them from scratch. The principal reason for the current and future success of the venture is that their viticultural and wine consultant is Christophe Baron of Cayuse. This is the only other winery that Baron works with, and that says all you need to know. Tel. (509) 525-3462; www.reynvaanfamilywinery.com
A touch more full and complete than the In The Rocks, the 2007 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah The Contender was co-fermented with Marsanne and aged in French oak for 18 months before bottling. The wine displays rich, smoky aromatics of brambly dark fruits, crème de cassis, violets, spice cake, minerals and smoked meats. The palate is medium to full bodied with stunning fruit, a full, rich texture, impressive balance and a solid, long finish. This has beautiful fruit as well as fresh acidity and a firm, structured core. Drink this superb Syrah over the next 15 years.
